Amber Heard was slated to reprise her role as Mera in the Aquaman sequel, but Warner Bros. Pictures stated in December 2020 that she would not be returning, claiming scheduling issues as the reason for her withdrawal due to her court processes with ex-husband Johnny Depp, which had a major influence on her career as well.

The first film depicts Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, the king of Atlantis, who must overcome his half-brother and a vengeful pirate to claim his throne.
