Reese Witherspoon and Jim Toth have announced their divorce, stating that they will “move forward with deep love and kindness.”
The 47-year-old Oscar winner celebrated her birthday on Wednesday, and on Friday she and her husband, a talent agent, who is 52 years old, released a joint statement announcing their separation. This news comes only days before what would have been their 12th wedding anniversary.

They announced their separation, citing personal reasons, after coming to a tough choice. They’ve spent many happy years together, but now they’re ready to move on while still cherishing and appreciating their shared legacy. In this new phase of their lives, their kid and their family are their first priorities. They said that they appreciate everyone’s understanding that this is a difficult time for their family and that they ask that their privacy be respected.
There were reportedly no divorce documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court though.
Ava, now 23, and Deacon, now 19, are Reese and Ryan Phillippe’s children from their previous marriage. The actress and her now ex-husband Ryan met at a party celebrating her 21st birthday. They wed in 1999 and later separated in 2008.
Reese said that a close acquaintance once told her, “No man will ever accept your children,” before she found love again after her divorce. This was the most horrific thing someone had ever said to her, and she was frightened. In an interview with Marie Claire, she said she would not stop until she found someone to disprove that claim.
The former couple was seen in London in July. Reese commemorated her husband Jim with an Instagram post with many photographs and the captions, “Happy Anniversary JT!! 11 years of adventures, love, and laughter. I feel so fortunate to be sharing this wonderful life with you.”
