Tarek El Moussa Opens Up About His Challenging Journey

HGTV star Tarek El Moussa, who separated from his then-wife and ‘Flip or Flop‘ co-star Christina Hall in 2016, is opening up about the myriad challenges he’s faced over the years in his forthcoming book. In the book, titled “Flip Your Life: How to Find Opportunity in Distress—in Real Estate, Business, and Life,” El Moussa delves into his remarkable journey of overcoming cancer, addiction, and a highly publicized divorce.

In an Instagram video shared recently, the 42-year-old reflected on his struggles, stating, “I started learning about real estate and even landed my own TV show on HGTV. I had two beautiful children and I thought I was at the peak of my game until I was diagnosed with two different cancers and going through a very public divorce.”

Despite these formidable challenges, El Moussa managed to rebuild his life, meet the love of his life, establish seven successful companies, host two hit TV shows, welcome his third child, and achieve goals he once considered unattainable.

The book sheds light on how a shoulder injury thwarted his promising baseball career in his youth, leading him down a path of alcohol dependency. However, a pivotal moment arrived when he chose to abandon drinking and rediscover the night sky, prompting him to realize the need for a profound transformation in his life.

El Moussa’s struggles with thyroid and testicular cancer, along with a debilitating back injury and subsequent addiction to steroids, are also chronicled in the book, tracing his challenging journey to recovery. “Flip Your Life” is set for release in February.

In 2018, El Moussa revealed on Dr. Drew‘s podcast that he battled both thyroid and testicular cancer simultaneously in 2013, just three years prior to his separation from Christina Hall. He attributed the strain on their relationship to various factors, including house purchases and renovations, their television show, and their burgeoning fame. He acknowledged that his health issues and hormonal imbalances affected his behavior and contributed to their growing apart.

Despite the intense media coverage of their divorce, El Moussa and Hall continued to collaborate professionally on “Flip or Flop” and eventually found their working relationship becoming smoother. The former couple shares two children, Taylor and Brayden.

El Moussa emphasized that his addiction to steroids was a more challenging ordeal than cancer itself, marking a pivotal moment in his life journey.

Tarek El Moussa shared a candid account of his challenging journey, explaining, “I was fatigued, and I attributed it to my thyroid or my testicular cancer. So, I followed the advice of my ex and visited a Botox doctor at a hormone clinic. Before I knew it, I was self-administering injections and taking steroids.”

He expressed the profound difficulty of this experience, revealing that he had inadvertently subjected himself to an excessive amount of testosterone. El Moussa went on to recount his health struggles, disclosing that following his battles with cancer, he suffered a severe back injury, leading to a dramatic weight loss of around 60 pounds. During this period from 2013 to 2016, he faced an uphill battle, confronting two different cancers, undergoing back surgery, and grappling with a multitude of hormonal issues.

El Moussa candidly shared the sense of losing himself during this tumultuous time, stating, “I lost my way. I lost my sense of identity. When I gazed into the mirror, I no longer recognized the person I had become.”

Tarek El Moussa, who married Heather Rae Young in 2021, celebrated the birth of their first child together, a son named Tristan, in January. El Moussa shared with Fox News Digital, “Honestly, this is the happiest, hands down, the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. I’m embracing my forties, relishing in the sense of stability and contentment. My family, my wife, my kids—I adore them all. I couldn’t be happier, and that’s the truth.”
