“The Wiz” is making a triumphant return to Broadway! Set to open on April 17, 2024, at New York City’s Marquis Theatre, this limited engagement revival is generating much anticipation. Wayne stars as the titular character in this reimagined production, which embarked on a national tour that kicked off in Baltimore. This revival, announced last December, promises to breathe new life into the beloved musical with a fresh perspective while preserving its iconic score by Tony Award winner Charlie Smalls. Preview performances will commence on March 29, making this a must-see event for theater enthusiasts.

Director Schele Williams and choreographer JaQuel Knight will be making their Broadway debuts with this production, bringing a fresh perspective to it. Williams, deeply influenced by the original show, expressed her gratitude for the impact it had on her life, citing the music, costumes, choreography, and Stephanie Mills as key inspirations.

The revival is set to be a celebration of Black excellence, featuring an outstanding cast, including Wayne Brady as the titular character, Nichelle Lewis as Dorothy, Deborah Cox as Glinda, Melody A. Betts as Aunt Em and Evillene, Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow. This production promises to captivate audiences and honor the musical’s enduring legacy.

March 29, 2024, and the musical opens Wednesday, April 17.

“The Wiz” announced its principal cast in June, with Wayne expressing his excitement about director Schele Williams and writer Amber Ruffin leading the production. The ensemble for this includes a talented and diverse group of performers, promising a captivating show.
