Ben Affleck Premieres Air At SXSW

During the South by Southwest Film and TV Festival (SXSW) in Austin on Saturday, Ben Affleck premiered his latest directorial venture, titled “Air,” and said he hoped it will do well at Amazon Studios.

“Tonight is the most important night of my professional life,” Affleck stated from the stage while also making some jokes about his less successful films. “This is an optimistic, hopeful movie about people. So I can’t hide behind being an auteur – [as if to say] ‘you don’t need to understand my movie.’ I really hope you like it… So no pressure, but it’s all on you.”, a media outlet in the US reported.

Air is a biographical drama that Affleck both directed and starred in, and it tells the story of Nike’s groundbreaking design of the Air Jordan shoeline. The premiere audience’s response proved that Affleck had nothing to worry about: the movie and its ensemble cast of show-stealers were greeted with a standing ovation. The movie Air portrays Matt Damon as the Nike executive who initially signed Michael Jordan to his first sneaker deal. Besides Affleck, the cast includes Viola Davis, Jason Bateman, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker, and Chris Messina as Nike executives.

Affleck said that he showed the film to the actual Phil Knight, “and halfway through, I realized that might have been a gigantic mistake,” considering that the film satirizes the Nike co-founder. “But people like to make fun of the boss; that’s part of workplace culture,” he continued. “I’ve been known to appear in an occasional meme.”

With its theatrical debut, “Air” marks Amazon’s first feature film to be distributed separately from Prime Video. The release date of the film is set for April 5.
