In an emotional video that was aired on Monday, Adele broke down in tears when addressing her divorce from Simon Konecki during the Final Carpool Karaoke with James Corden.
The Last Last Late Late Show with James Corden Carpool Karaoke Special will premiere at 10 p.m. Thursday on CBS (and will stream live and on demand on Paramount+), and will feature the superstar recording artist singing in the vehicle with Corden. As presenter of The Late Late Show, Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” is the last of its kind.
Adele And James Corden In The Final Carpool Karaoke
The show also features a reuniting of “Carpool Karaoke” James Corden and Adele, whose 2016 performance has been seen over 260 million times and is among YouTube’s most popular late-night highlights.
In the latest episode of “Carpool Karaoke,” Adele wakes her old buddy at his house before volunteering to drive the late-night presenter to work. Once they’re in the vehicle, Adele flips the script and asks Corden about their past, including their first Carpool, the time he attempted to prank her, and the emotional chat that inspired her song.
While initially lighthearted, the tone quickly turned serious as Adele said that James, who was also fighting back tears, had helped her get over the breakup by taking her on a vacation.
When James, 44, sought the singer out for guidance through a difficult period in his own life, she finally admitted that he had inspired a section in her song I Drink Wine.
“[The verse] was inspired by a conversation that you and I had, and it was the 4th of January, 2020 or something, and we’d been on vacation together with the kids.” Adele spoke up.
Two years after declaring their separation, Adele, 34, formalized her divorce from Simon in March 2021. She then disclosed that she had gone on a family vacation with James, his wife Julia Carey, their three children, and her son Angelo, 10.
She sobbed, “And we were on our way home and my mood had changed and it was like the first year that I felt like I had to hold myself accountable, for just being an adult, whereas the year before that I left Simon, you and Jules and the kids were so integral in looking after me and Angelo.”
Developments On The Late Late Show
Tom Cruise, who was also revealed to perform in the primetime special, will join James Earl Jones as Pumbaa and Timon in The Lion 431King musical, stunning an unprepared crowd at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.
After Craig Ferguson‘s tenure as presenter of The Late Late Show ended in March 2015, Corden stepped in to take over. He had already said that he would be quitting the company the year after it was revealed. Thursday at 12:37 a.m. ET/PT will be his last show ever, and special guests Harry Styles and Will Ferrell will be there to help him say goodbye.
The long-running program will be replaced on CBS with a new version of the comedy game show MIDNIGHT, of which Stephen Colbert is an executive producer.
