Majestic Revival of the ‘Wild Kingdom’

“Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom: Protecting the Wild” is set to premiere on October 7, marking the 60th anniversary of the original “Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom” series, which debuted on NBC. This next generation of the iconic show will focus on sharing success stories related to wildlife conservation in North America. The series aims to bring the Wild Kingdom brand back to its origins by revisiting and building upon the work initiated decades ago by the original series hosts, renowned zoologists Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler.

“Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom: Protecting the Wild” is produced by Hearst Media Production Group (HMPG) in an exclusive partnership with Mutual of Omaha. It will air on Saturday mornings as part of NBC’s “The More You Know” programming block. Additionally, viewers can access the educational and informational series on NBC.com and NBC Video on Demand (VOD).

The series is co-hosted by wildlife experts Peter Gros and Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, who will guide viewers through various renowned locations, including the Pacific Northwest, the Channel Islands, Central Texas, and New England. During their journeys, Gros and Dr. Wynn-Grant will connect with experts dedicated to safeguarding endangered species on both land and in the ocean. These efforts include protecting animals like the manatee, Channel Island fox, puffin, beaver, bald eagle, hellbender salamander, the critically endangered black-footed ferret, and the exceedingly rare Devils Hole pupfish, which holds the title of the world’s rarest fish.

The premiere episode on October 7th will transport viewers to the Mojave Desert, revisiting the desert tortoise—an animal featured on the original “Wild Kingdom” series in 1964. In a later episode, Gros and Dr. Wynn-Grant will journey deep into a Texas cave to be surrounded by a staggering 20 million Mexican Freetail bats, which make up the world’s largest known bat colony.

The episode airing on October 14th will take viewers to the coast of Maine, revisiting a conservation effort from the original show in 1980. During that time, puffins were on the verge of endangerment. Marlin Perkins played a crucial role in reintroducing these beloved “sea parrots” to their sole natural habitat in the United States, known as Puffin Island. Now, forty-three years later, Peter Gros and Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant return to the island to showcase the remarkable success of Perkins’ efforts, with puffins thriving once again on America’s shores.
